The design thinking behind Kat\u014d was always to showcase the <\/span>woodworking and engineering expertise that defines Lyndon. Beautiful\u00a0<\/span>show-wood furniture has long been our strong suit but this time we\u00a0<\/span>wanted to produce a statement piece, so we began sketching ideas for a\u00a0<\/span>timber armchair with an exo-frame supporting an upholstered seat and\u00a0<\/span>back. This would enable us to put as much wood on display as possible.\u00a0<\/span>Everything about timber excites us. We love its look, feel and even its\u00a0<\/span>smell, from when it\u2019s delivered to our factory as rough sawn planks, to its\u00a0<\/span>departure in the form of finely crafted furniture. Wood is nature\u2019s ideal\u00a0<\/span>building material \u2013 renewable, durable and soothing on the eye. With the\u00a0<\/span>right skills, it can be worked into many shapes and forms.\u00a0<\/span>Though wood can look hard and unforgiving when it\u2019s cut with straight\u00a0<\/span>edges and assembled with right-angle joins, we decided to give our new\u00a0<\/span>chair a gentle, organic aesthetic. Every piece of wood has a unique\u00a0<\/span>character and this was something we were able to celebrate through\u00a0<\/span>Kat\u014d\u2019s timber exoskeleton, with the natural grain on show and rounded\u00a0<\/span>structural features including exposed joinery.<\/span><\/p>\n

A sensory experience<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Wrapping around the sides and back of the chair in a horseshoe shape, <\/span>the arm rail caps off the design and turns Kat\u014d into the statement piece\u00a0<\/span>we wanted. This element of the exoskeleton proved to be an exciting <\/span>challenge as we searched for a form that would invite the sitter in and\u00a0<\/span>give the design a unique and memorable quality. <\/span>The solution was to increase the proportions of the arm and create a <\/span>broad, elliptical rail. We widened it to 80mm and gave it slimmer edges,\u00a0<\/span>while retaining its roundedness through a soft, domed top surface. The\u00a0<\/span>aerofoil-inspired cross-sectional shape of Kat\u014d\u2019s arms elegantly suits the\u00a0<\/span>organic feel of the structure beneath, while making a clear visual\u00a0<\/span>statement. It has an architectural feel to it \u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>like a light, expansive\u00a0<\/span>platform supported by the sturdy cylindrical leg posts.\u00a0<\/span>The gently curved surface of the armrest was an instant hit when we\u00a0<\/span>trialled Kat\u014d with prospective customers. It performs its function perfectly\u00a0<\/span>when the sitter alights in or rises from the chair. While seated their\u00a0<\/span>fingertips are naturally drawn to the wood grain texture, which turns Kat\u014d\u00a0<\/span>into a wonderful sensory experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Detail matters<\/span><\/strong>

<\/span><\/div>\r\n
Subtle and minimal, the upholstered seat and back continue the timeless <\/span>simplicity built up in the woodwork. This allows the timber to stand to the <\/span>fore and make a visual and tactile impact, while small, considered details <\/span>
in the design of the cushioning speak of comfort. <\/span>The crisp look of the back is softened with a horizontal pull stitch that <\/span>gathers the fabric for a plush effect. Perfectly parallel with the back rail, <\/span>this seam guides the eye along the line across the back while breaking up <\/span>the uniformity of the cushion and creating a transition between the arms <\/span>on either side. Meanwhile, the rear corners of the back rest at the apexes <\/span>of the finger joints, seamlessly connecting the arms to the back rail \u2013 <\/span>another satisfying touch for anyone with an eye for detail.<\/span>

Timeless simplicity<\/span><\/strong>

<\/span><\/div>\r\n
With comfort, softness and serenity becoming increasingly important in <\/span>commercial settings, Kat\u014d gives architects and designers the opportunity <\/span>to make a statement with timber furniture within their new d\u00e9cor <\/span>
schemes. While it looks hand sculpted, our investment in technology <\/span>means we can manufacture it at scale and the design suits a wide range <\/span>of fabrics and finishes. <\/span>We can see Kat\u014d declaring itself in a contemporary fabric within an oak <\/span>
frame, with the grain showing through for the desired effect. Equally, we <\/span>know that Kat\u014d will have luxury appeal when upholstered in supple leather <\/span>with a walnut frame. It\u2019s a design that will perfectly suit informal meeting <\/span>spaces, waiting areas and travel lounges, hospitality settings and we <\/span>would like to think that people will want it in their homes as well. <\/span>Simple shapes, high-quality materials and a crafted finish give Kat\u014d its <\/span>aura of refined comfort \u2013 an elegant statement of timeless simplicity and <\/span>comfort.<\/span><\/div>\r\n
