They are turning their trade into an art form, which is part and parcel of the way we make our furniture. \u201cWhen I first started making furniture, everything was very square. Square arms, square back, square seats. You could go into any bank anywhere in the world and it would have very blocky furniture, like Lego. They were so easy to pattern it was unbelievable\u201d says Steve.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the way we design furniture has changed,\u201d he continues. \u201cFashion goes in circles and the forms we design now are more organic, inspired by the mid-century modern look of the 60s and 70s but with contemporary appeal. I had to find creative new ways to tailor these pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Saville Row Precision<\/h3>\n

Steve found inspiration by watching videos<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of seamstresses and tailors. These skilled\u00a0practitioners on Saville Row measure, cut and\u00a0stitch fabric to fit the curved lines of the human\u00a0form, and Steve now does the same as he figures\u00a0out how to cover the sculpted forms our designers\u00a0come up with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For example, there’s our latest wing back chair,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Amelia,\u201d says Steve. \u201cWith flowing, never-ending\u00a0lines like that it\u2019s extremely hard to convince a\u00a0piece of fabric to warp itself around the shape.\u00a0We don\u2019t like exposed seams or zips on show, so\u00a0you have to get really creative with regards to how\u00a0you cut the pattern and stitch it so that everything\u00a0is concealed.\u201d he says<\/span><\/p>\n

Seams suited to forms<\/h3>\n

All the while, he\u2019s thinking creatively, looking for better ways to accentuate the design by better positioning the seams. \u201cCould we curve it, could we taper it, could we tailor it to make it more attractive? I\u2019ve moved away from just putting
\nseams where you expect them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

A pattern for each fabric<\/h3>\n

\u201cOutside of work I\u2019m an artist and I\u2019ve always punished myself trying to achieve perfection,\u201d he says. \u201cTwenty years ago, if we\u2019d designed a chair like Amelia we\u2019d have done one pattern for it, but I\u2019ve got to the point where I\u2019ve realised that every piece of furniture needs more than one pattern. Every fabric will hold to the form of the piece in a different way, so we adjust our patterns for each fabric we use.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Amelia went to the shop floor it had five or six patterns, but we\u2019ll add to them as customers specify different fabrics. In a year I\u2019d say Amelia will go from six to 15,\u201d continues Steve<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This is possible thanks to our use of the latest technology. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a computer-aided patterning machine with the ability to grow or shrink a pattern by length, width or on the diagonal, and you can customise each individual panel if you need to. Even if you\u2019ve got a crazy fabric that you think will never fit, we can adjust the digital pattern in seconds. It\u2019s engineered patterning \u2013 millimetre perfect,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Even when the perfect pattern has been developed for a new armchair or sofa, Steve will not rest. His meticulous dedication to detail exemplifies the Boss approach, and a commitment to ensure that whether the seat we manufacture<\/span>is number one, 500 or 5,000, its form will replicate exactly the original design.<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenge is that every fabric has its own individual qualities. For example, leather is thicker and stiffer than textiles, while the new sustainable fabrics Boss Design is introducing have different levels of flexibility and suppleness than man\u00a0<\/span>made fibre. This is where Steve takes the art of patterning to another level.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
